One in three companies lacks policies for information security, data encryption and classification, according to Protiviti’s 2015 IT Security and Privacy Survey. What’s more, 71% have a less-than-excellent understanding of their most sensitive data and information.

As a result, while two out of three organizations report being more focused on cybersecurity, most lack confidence that they can prevent a targeted cyberattack, either from external parties or insiders.

As more businesses try to improve their security posture by prioritizing sensitive data, Protiviti found one of the most noticeable differences between top-performing organizations and other companies is how they approach intellectual property.

Loss of this information can have catastrophic implications, but businesses may be overlooking the risk because, unlike many other forms of data that companies manage, there are no regulatory fines for exposing IP information.
