Best Blogs of ‘09
Thursday Feb 19, 2009

With the advent of blogs came the ability for any Tom, Dick and Harry (or Emily) to post what they feel is relevant information to most of the world via the internet. Some blogs have survived and have even become a source of revenue, while others have disappeared into the vast, crowded graveyards of dead or unattended-to blogs.

The top three most popular (and most successful) blogs on the list are:

1.       Talking Points Memo – A veteran blog focused on news reporting, most times political in nature. TPM actually won a George Polk Award for its coverage of the firing of eight U.S. attorneys in December of 2006. Journalist Josh Marshall started the site in November of 2000 and since then he’s become a favorite of online news junkies – relying on them for news tips and volunteer assistance – the sign of a great blog.

2.       The Huffington Post – Agree or disagree with this one, Arianna Huffington has built a useful portal for political news and information which she gathers from many of her connections to “people on the inside.” Like Josh Marshall, (but on a much larger scale) Huffington has an enormous offsite staff that contributes stories pro bono. Workers that work for free? Genius, Arianna.

3.       Lifehacker – For a blog that has only been around for four years, this one has managed to take hold of the web-savvy person’s short attention span. Unlike TPM or The Huffington Post, Lifehacker focuses on “tips and downloads for getting things done.” It’s more of a technology based site with free downloads available for everything from converting your video to iPod-friendly format to creating secure URL’s. A useful blog indeed.

The remaining 22 best blogs can be viewed here. Unfortunately, Risk Management’s blog came in at number 26, just missing the cut. Or so we like to think.
