In its Risk Career Survey 2021, the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) surveyed 2,100 risk professionals from 101 countries. While many felt pushed to do more in their current jobs, respondents largely felt optimistic about their future career opportunities. Almost 70% said they expect their career opportunities to increase significantly or slightly over the next 18 months. They may be right—more than 50% of risk managers said their department will increase staffing this year.

But the pandemic has also ramped up work pressures, with 54% of risk managers stating that “they feel their department is currently insufficiently resourced for the demands being placed on it.” Further, 70% of respondents stated that their workloads had increased significantly or slightly. Key factors behind this increase included the COVID-19 pandemic, more regulation and new technology. Despite the added pressures, 70% of respondents said that they were satisfied with their career in risk management, and 84% would recommend the profession.
