Risk Management accepts bylined stories on all topics related to risk. Because we receive a large volume of submissions, please familiarize yourself with the following procedures before writing or submitting a piece.

BASICS

  • All articles and story pitches should be sent to our editors Morgan O’RourkeHilary Tuttle or Jennifer Post.
  • Before submitting, take a look at our Editorial Calendar, which highlights some of the topics we are currently most interested in. If you have a story idea that does not appear on the topics list, feel free to reach out to our editors to discuss it. Please also check out some of our most recent stories here on the site to get a sense of our tone and structure, and to see what topics we have already covered.
  • As a digital publication, we publish articles on a regular, rolling basis. As a general rule of thumb, if you have a specific publication timeframe in mind, you should query us about a story two months in advance.
  • Only original articles that have not been published elsewhere will be accepted for publication, unless otherwise requested by the editors.
  • Risk Management does not accept or publish content that was created through the use of generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT).

WRITING TIPS

  • All articles should be relevant to the corporate and enterprise risk management field, and not overly focused on personal/home/auto insurance or solely on consumer/political affairs.
  • We do not publish pieces that promote a particular company, product or service. All articles must be vendor-neutral.
  • Articles should depend on some form of narrative structure, so minimize the use of bulleted lists and only include any in the context of a composed article. Pieces in the style of “10 Reasons Why …” or “5 Things to Know About…” can work as well, as long as each item is detailed in sentence form.
  • Arguments should be made clearly, and backed up with concrete examples or proof.
  • Articles should provide appropriate context, definitions and other necessary information so that someone only generally familiar with the specific topic would be able to understand the article without difficulty.
  • Articles should not be too similar to a recently published piece, although they may address the same general subject from a different angle. To avoid subjects/angles we have already covered and frame a strong submission, please familiarize yourself with our archives before submitting an article or pitch.
  • Avoid the use of footnotes and legal citations.
  • Risk Management uses the AP style guide for the most part. If you have any questions about style, please feel free to ask.

ARTICLE LENGTH

  • Feature-length articles (1600+ words) take a more in-depth look into a subject. Generally they should examine multiple facets of an issue and include quotes from relevant experts or reports.
  • Column-length articles (1000-1500 words) take a top-level or specific look at a subject and can include lists and how-to’s.
